Ingredients

  • 2 ounces of amaretto liqueur
  • 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce of simple syrup
  • 1 egg white
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon twist or maraschino cherry for garnish optional

Instructions

Prepare the glass:

  1. Begin by selecting an old-fashioned glass or a sour glass.
  2. If desired, you can add a touch of elegance to your presentation by rimming the glass with sugar. Simply moisten the rim with a lemon wedge and gently dip it into a small plate of granulated sugar.

Combine the ingredients:

  1. In a mixing glass, add 2 ounces of amaretto liqueur, 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and 1/2 ounce of simple syrup.
  2. Crack open an egg and separate the egg white into a separate container, ensuring that no traces of yolk are included.
  3. Add the egg white to the mixing glass, without ice.

Dry shake:

  1. Using a cocktail shaker, give the contents of the mixing glass a vigorous dry shake. This means shaking the ingredients without ice for about 15-20 seconds. The goal is to aerate the egg white and create a frothy texture.

Add ice and shake again:

  1. Fill the cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes.
  2. Pour the contents of the mixing glass, including the frothy egg white, into the cocktail shaker.
  3. Tightly seal the shaker to prevent any leaks and shake vigorously for an additional 15-20 seconds. This step chills the drink and helps incorporate the flavours.

Strain and garnish:

  1. Remove the lid of the shaker and place a strainer over the glass.
  2. Carefully pour the cocktail into the glass, allowing the liquid to strain out while holding back the ice cubes.
  3. For a finishing touch, garnish your Amaretto Sour with a lemon twist or a maraschino cherry. The visual appeal adds to the overall drinking experience.

Recipe Notes

The Amaretto Sour is best enjoyed when the flavours are at their peak. As you raise the glass to your lips, you will be greeted by a symphony of tastes. The sweet almond notes of the amaretto liqueur harmonise beautifully with the zesty punch of the lemon juice. The addition of simple syrup balances the flavours, ensuring that the cocktail isn't too tart or too sweet.
