I hated peas as a kid. Unless they were swimming in gravy. Nowadays I have a little more time for them. I especially like mushy peas. Mushy peas go especially well with a piece of grilled salmon or some lamb cutlets. Here’s how to make mushy peas:

  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • ½ onion finely diced
  • ¼ cup milk


  • Place the peas and onion in a saucepan, cover with water and bring to the boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes or until the peas can be squashed with the back of a spoon. Drain the mixture and then mash the peas with a fork Add the milk then reheat, stirring for 2-5 minutes.
  • If you like your peas thicker, continue to heat and stir until the desired consistency is achieved.
  • Enjoy.


This makes enough for 2-3 serves as a side dish with a total calorie count of 166. You can use a stick blender or food processor to make a finer mash.
